Awards
The awards given are as follows:
  • Participation Trophies: An award to every member of the team that attends the banquet; because we stress competing, fellowship, and sportsmanship more than winning. We feel that every Strider that participates deserves an award.
  • High Point Award: Honoring the athletes who earned the highest points in each age group. This is based on the most points scored in each age group at our three home meets.
  • Certificate of Record: We recognize any athlete who has set or broke an existing Steuben Striders record.
Memorial Awards: The memorial awards are reserved for athletes who have been with the Striders for a minimum of two years.
  • Quinten Worrels Nelson Award: He was a good friend and team player. The award goes to the boy or girl that best exemplifies the attributes of Quinten.
  • Tracy Montina Young Pleasant Award: The Founder’s daughter always said, “To give honor, praise, and glory to God, family, friends, and success is only a step away.”
  • Brian Fritz Award: He was a distance runner and threw the shot put. He was a Pediatric physician.
  • Kerri Sims Award: Kerri was an athlete who had always cared for her fellow teammates. She told them to do their best even if they felt their best wasn’t good enough; because a winner is a person who finishes the race with heart, determination, and spirit. “THAT’S A WINNER.”
  • Gary Murry Award: This award goes to the boy or girl that best shows sportsmanship, determination, competitiveness, and dedication to the sport. This award is open to all Striders on the team.
  • Elizabeth Montgomery Award: A dedicated person who loved helping the Striders in every way. Giving the runners encouragement even if they did not win, she always told them, “you are a winner because you tried your best, and your best is what makes you a winner”. The award goes to the girl that best exemplifies the attributes of Elizabeth.
  • Eugene Hargrove Award: Eugene loved working with the Striders. His motto was, “Never give up, always remember to support & congratulate your teammate". This helps develop a lasting friendship with your fellow teammates. The award goes to the Strider that best exemplifies this.
  • Francis Bergsma Award: Francis Bergsma followed in the footsteps of five of his older siblings who were also Striders.  His hard work on the track prepared him for a two-year battle with brain cancer as a teenager.  He inspired his family and friends with his courage and kindness during the fight, always remaining hopeful when facing a variety of tests and treatments.  Inspired by Francis’ courage, this award recognizes a Strider who perseveres in the face of challenges on the track, challenges which prepare for life beyond the track.
  • President Award: Must have been with the Steuben Striders for at least two years and show competitiveness, pride, and loyalty to the Strider Program.
  • Bob Young Memorial Award: This award is the highest award given in the program. The award goes to the boy and girl that best exemplifies what Mr. Young would have wanted instilled in his youngsters. The recipients must have been with the program for at least three years. Attitude, competitiveness, loyalty, sportsmanship, and fellowship will be considered.

Dear Lord, in the battle that goes on through life, I ask but a field that is fair, a chance that is equal with all in the strife, and courage to strive and to bear. And if I should win, let it be by the code with my faith and my honor held high. And if I should lose, let me stand by the road and cheer as the winners go by. Amen ” - Athlete's Prayer
